I’ve been tasked with making 4 sets of 2 bowls that nest together. The customer and I started out with specific dimensions, but as the clay would have it, didn’t turn out that way. Just to get to where I wanted them, I wedged two pounds of clay for each bowl. I trimmed each bowl (approx. one pound) down to the specific measurements, but I didn’t like how they turned out in the end. I relied too heavily on making them exactly as specified instead of creating something that would have worked out in the end.
From what I gathered, it’s more important to allow the bowls to nest rather than making them exactly the dimensions discussed. While the size is important (it really is), an approximate size, with some tolerance, would be formed more naturally. Often times, the clay tells you how it wants to shape up rather than me deciding for it.
I shall keep trying…
Process Notes
These bowls are tasked to be cereal and veggie bowls. Cereal bowls are pretty open to interpretation, but if you're dedicating a bowl to cereal, you can bet that it's an important meal. I, for one, LOVE a good cereal... oatmeal is a particular weakness of mine. The ones in the pictures (the lower profile bowls) are bit small in my eyes. If they were a tad wider we may have our bowls. The taller bowls are for veggies. I love the idea of a veggie bowl. I can imagine that the veggies would stay a bit warmer nestled in their own bowl. Maybe same height as the lower bowls but a bit narrower. We'll see what happens.
